The importance of free speech was highlighted in the 2011, 8-1 Supreme Court decision regarding Westover Baptist Church. Although almost everyone finds Westover’s picketing of soldiers funerals with signs that say the soldier (and the rest of America) are going to hell for allowing gay people to live, the Court ruled that their speech is protected by the First Amendment. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the Chief Justice wrote, “As a nation we have chosen a different course – to protect even hurtful speech on public issues to ensure that we do not stifle public debate,” the chief justice wrote.”

Morris Davis

Another case may be going to the Supreme Court regarding the right of federal employees to make political comments that are contrary to the government’s narratives. According to an Al-Jazeera article, Morris Davis, who served as Chief Prosecutor at Guantanamo until 2007, quit that job when he felt the Military commissions there were flawed. He took a job as a researcher at the Library of Congress, where evaluations on his work performance were good.
